The History Of The Site
The Texas City Dike is a levee that’s located in Texas City. The dike is flanked by the tip of Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula and offers 5 miles of fishing access from the road. Originally designed to help reduce the impact of sediment accumulation in the lower Bay area, the site is now a beloved landmark that receives thousands of local and tourist visitors every week.
As Texas City grew to the thriving community it is today, the dike’s purpose shifted to becoming a hope against any catastrophic water surges from hurricane landfall in the Bay area. The hope was that it would become a primary defense against water coming from the Gulf of Mexico and the Galveston Bay area if a disaster hit.
About The Dike
The dike is parallel to and north of the Texas City Channel, where shipping traffic accesses the busy Port of Texas City. The dike’s structure comprises approximately 5.34 miles of pile dike. Another reason for its development was to help protect the Texas City Channel from excessive silting and cross currents, although the channel is still dredged frequently to help prevent shoaling.

The Texas City Dike stretches for over five miles into Galveston Bay. Some excellent amenities are available for visitors, including covered picnic areas, portable restrooms, fish-cleaning stations, hiking trails, three-quarters of beaches, boat ramps, and bike rentals. Costs To Visit
Throughout the summer months (which runs from the first weekend in March to the last weekend in October), it will cost you $10 per vehicle to enter on the weekends. Over the winter months and during weekdays in summer (excluding holidays), entry is free. Admission is also free for anyone who visits on foot or by bike.
