The city is named after John Dickinson who received a land grant from the Mexican government in 1824 just north of the present location of the city of Dickinson. About 1850 a settlement was established along the shores of Dickinson Bayou. By 1850 Dickinson become a stop on the railroad. Dickinson had a post office in 1890 with the city’s current name.
Dickinson did not experience much growth but shortly after 2005 developers started buying and developing large tracts of land on the West side on I-45 South. A discount Mall was added South of the City on the West side of I-45. This growth is part of the boom that Galveston County is experiencing. Plans are for the continued growth of this area. It is partly do to housing cost increases in Harris County (Houston) and low interest rates. These middle class bedroom communities are bringing new economic opportunities to Dickinson.
