The History of Galveston
Galveston was named after the Spanish military leader Bernardo Vicente de Gálvez y Madrid. For a time during the 19th century, it was the largest city in the state and one of the largest ports in the United States, earning the nickname “Queen City of the Gulf.”
However, in 1900 a deadly hurricane devastated the island; it obliterated hundreds of buildings and killed over 6000 people. This storm still ranks as the deadliest natural disaster in United States history. An incredible engineering effort followed that still protects the town to this day. A giant seawall was constructed, and the entire town was raised 17 feet above its old elevation. In 1915 Galveston faced another monster storm and fared much better, so their efforts were rewarded.
